Description

2023 Etna Bianco Calderara Sottana

by Tenute delle Terre Nere is a pure expression of Carricante and a study in elegance and volcanic intensity. The nose is striking, weaving together crushed lemon zest, ripe yellow pear, and flinty minerality, all lifted by hints of wild herbs and white flowers. It glides across the palate with an almost weightless grace, yet its depth is undeniable—waves of juicy orchard fruits mingle with saline tension and a whisper of almond cream. A vibrant acidity electrifies the senses, carrying the wine through a long, mouthwatering finish of wet stone and citrus oil. Aged in a combination of stainless steel and neutral oak, it maintains remarkable purity while developing a textural finesse that enhances its aging potential. This wine finds its perfect counterpart in seafood crudos, grilled langoustines, or creamy risottos infused with saffron and shellfish. Tenute delle Terre Nere, renowned for their mastery of Etna’s terroir, captures the essence of Calderara Sottana’s stony soils, delivering a wine of remarkable precision and soul.

The Story
expand_more
Tenuta delle Terre Nere was established 30 years ago by Marco de Garcia and his brother on exceptional sites. Located on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, between the village of Solicchiata and the town of Randazzo, the area is historically recognized as the very finest of the entire appellation for Nerello Mascalese. The 27 hectares of local varieties have been cultivated organically from the very beginning in 2002, at a very low yield. Most of the vines are between 50 and 100 years old. Once best known for introducing Americans to great Italian wines as an importer, Marco de Garcia has also become, over the years, a reference for the Etna DOC.
