Amarone Special

The Wine: This month we are offering a three-bottle pack of this fantastic Amarone for $229.95, down from our usual of $269.95

Le Marognole Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2016 Italy

Corvina & Corvinone 80%, Rondinella 20% Aged 36 months in new French oak ‘tonneaux’. Aromatic complexity. Bold & elegant, combining the essence of cherry with balsamic & toasted aromas.

It’s starting to get cold outside and at Charlie’s Burgers this means getting warm with our favourite big Italian red: Amarone. The famous product of Verona is made by drying grapes on bamboo, straw or wooden racks, letting the grapes dry out and concentrating the flavour, raising alcohol, and upping the weight and depth. While some of these wines can tend towards syrupy weight and over-extraction, we have sourced a fantastic example from a small family winery, Le Marognole, a traditionally made wine, aged for three years in a mix of new and old French Oak tonneaux (larger barrels).

This Amarone is remarkable not only for its classic combination of balsamic and dark red fruit, but also for how it preserves fruit character alongside darkness and weight. This is true small-scale boutique winemaking, focused on quality over quantity, with a focus on fruit quality in the vineyard The winemaking here is never heavy handed, and the moment you smell this wine, you will be able to tell that this is a wine of grace and balance, not only the power the region is known for. These wines will cellar comfortably for 10-15 years but drink well now with a bit of a decant. Perfect with hard cheeses, torrone, figs and fig jams, and, ideally, a fire and a bearskin rug.
