Description
2016 Patria Etna Rosso “Sensi” DOC
If the Palici Brut is Etna’s sparkle, “Sensi” is her soul - deep, reflective, and quietly powerful. A red born from old vines on the volcano’s northern slope, it combines the poise of Pinot Noir with the backbone of Nebbiolo. This is the taste of lava rock and mountain air, structured, savory, and full of story. The nose opens with wild cherries, blood orange, and crushed stone, followed by hints of spice and dried herbs. A blend of 85% Nerello Mascalese and 15% Nerello Cappuccio, grown at 750 metres in contrada Moganazzie. Fermented in horizontal steel tanks with extended maceration for 12–15 days, then aged 12 months in large Slavonian oak barrels and another year in bottle before release. Awarded Gold Medal at the 2024 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, this is Etna’s elegance recognized on the world stage. A dream with grilled lamb, ragù pasta, or aged pecorino. Also perfect beside roasted vegetables or mushroom risotto, where its earthy tones echo beautifully. Cantine Patria is one of the region’s most historic and heartfelt producers. The DiMiceli family, whose deep agricultural roots stretch back decades, established Patria as a testament to the land they call home. The name itself, Patria, meaning “homeland”, captures their devotion to Sicily’s soul, and particularly to Etna’s raw, untamed beauty.

Taste

On the palate, it’s graceful yet firm, with silky tannins and a mineral edge that gives the wine lift and tension. The finish is long and quietly resonant, a slow burn rather than a flash.
Cellaring Potential
expand_more
Will continue to evolve over the next five years, gaining even more complexity through 2030 but also wonderful now.
